Aloha fellow members!
On Sunday April 22, 2018 the Best Day Foundation chapter of La Jolla had their annual event at La Jolla Shores Beach Park. Jim Lattis and myself were there on to lend a hand by taking the Keikis out in 1-3 foot waves and tandem surfing with them. The day started at the break of dawn for Jim myself and mama Mae as we loaded up and headed down to La Jolla. The morning was beautiful the surf was perfect for our needs and there was a crowd not only for our event but also a marathon that had been routed right through the park.
My KUSI friend Dave Scott was there with his news crew to cover the morning event. Before hitting the water each child was suited up in a wetsuit, flotation device and helmet. This was the first time for most of the Keikis and the feeling of excitement they had and the smiles on their faces after that first ride was one that only a surfer would know. Jim was a great waterman by keeping the board stable, kids safe and wading throughout the surf in between taking turns surfing with the kids. That’s a lot of work even for a twenty five year old person. These Keikis are the sweetest kids and their parents and siblings are so patient, understanding and gracious. Jim and I will be there again in September for their end of summer aloha.
Best Day Foundation enables children and young adults with special needs to build confidence and self esteem through adventure activities which stretch their limits, expand their true potential, reinforce their achievement, & connect them with diverse populations in their community.
